The Red Ledger
TW-196 is stored in a sealed case in Sector 7. Viewing requires Level 4 clearance. Attempts to add, remove, or alter entries are expressly forbidden following the erasure incident.
TW-196 is a leather-bound ledger containing a running tally of every death occurring globally at all times — updated in real time in a handwriting that moves too fast to follow. It never stops updating. It never runs out of pages. The count on any given page, when checked against mortality data, is accurate to within 0.2%. Researchers have attempted to add false entries and found them corrected within seconds. One researcher attempted to erase an entry corresponding to a named individual — the individual died 3 hours later of an unrelated cause.
TW-196 was recovered from a deceased actuary whose estate included a note: 'Please keep it updating. I've been keeping it since 1962. I don't know what happens if it stops.'
