Containment Procedures

TW-180 requires no containment. The library is operating normally. M.A.L.I.C.E has a standing arrangement to review a sample of annotated returns each month. The annotations are consistently thoughtful, occasionally profound, and have never contained threatening content.

Description

TW-180 is a phenomenon in which books checked out from a specific library branch are returned with marginalia not made by the borrower — annotations that engage intelligently with the text, sometimes correcting factual errors, sometimes offering deeply personal emotional responses that the borrower reports feeling are addressed directly to them. The annotations are in different handwriting styles. No single patron has been identified as the source. The library has checked out approximately 12,000 affected books to date.

Discovery Log

TW-180 was flagged when a patron wrote to the library to thank the 'previous reader' whose notes had helped them through a personal crisis. The library had no record of any prior annotations in the book.
